Pessimistic Optimism
That time of the year is near again, January 1st
Looking forward to it? Excited fit to burst?
Will it be like other years? Of nights where we can’t sleep
And days so full of tears we just can’t help but weep
Losing friends and family to fill our lives with sorrow
Feel utter disappointment and not want to see tomorrow
Then we make promises knowing when we make them
Our determinations weak and we will just forsake them
We try to give up smoking, with help, not like the past
But even with the patches we know that it won’t last
It’s the same for drinkers who are trying to cut down
It’s not long before they are back out on the town
We are getting really fat, the diets don’t work as planned
Now we can only see our shoes when their in our hand
We tell ourselves no exercise is the reason for the belly
Not too much food and chocolate, or sitting watching telly
So this year I have vowed not to be so pessimistic
And try to wear a happy face, be more optimistic
This time I’ll try harder to keep these vows it’s clear
But if I fail, well there’s always January 1st next year
