Terra Australis:
Glimpses Of Thy Clear Magnificence
I
O Southern Land,
So hypothetically
Continent,
Art thou not grand,
Even amidst the world’s
Incontinence!
And canst thou, great
Terra Australis, fathom
Western cries
That salivate
For glimpses of thy clear
Magnificence?
II
New Holland rock,
Where Abel Tasmann left his
Gallant mark;
Of equal stock,
Explorer Matthew Flinders
Pleased the ear:
Australia,
Embracing more great portions
Of the earth;
Regalia,
And pomp and pageantry
Down Under there,
III
Where swift Namoi
Inclandestinely to
His Darling flows
To reservoir
Along northwestern coasts
At golden sun!
Koala bears
Provide no swig for drunken
Revelers;
Flora so rare
And megafauna only
Here homespun
IV
Breed kangaroos,
Marsupial lions, Gaonnas,
And horse-sized ducks.
And could I choose
The vast Great Barrier Reef
To be my home,
Matilda’s waltz
And swagman jumbucks in
My tucker bag
Are ancient faults
To sweeten my proverbial
Honeycomb.
V
Three-ocean land,
Titanic isle and tiny
Continent,
Your full command
Mt Disappointment struggles
To reveal.
But when I come
To marvel at your Dream Time
Elegance,
My new shalom
No other place on earth
Shall e’er repeal.
