Image for the poem etude

etude

broken chords
soft-zither
through my fingers,
recessing
the heart whose
conscience lingers
with a suave,
nonchalant
attitude,
though the ears
rejoice with
gratitude

exposition
themes cloned
from leitmotiv,
quiet as
a dove and
then explosive,
rise above
the mano
destra streaming,
then return,
its anger-
rush redeeming.

intricate
the subtle
innuendo
mirroring
the lyric
ostinato.
tempo primo
senza
ritenuto;
tres corde,
ad libitum
rubato.

broken chords,
pianissimo
ransom,
harmonic
nightshades
enriched by random
chopinesque
development
of sequence,
resolution
by a
plagal cadence

cat-and-mouse
tail-ending
the codetta—
no recapitulation
vendetta.
scattered
ebon-ivory
delusions
now resolve
in consummate
effusion.

An etude is a short musical composition, typically for one instrument, designed as an exercise to improve the technique or demonstrate the skill of the player. I'm certain you have figured out that this poem is about a piano etude. It becomes technical in stanzas 3 and 4, but don't worry about that: the terms are merely musical jargon.
