The Colorado Mountains At 3 A.m

The mountain air
is as pure as the moonlight
that pierces through the darkness
guiding me as I drive through
the man made streets covered by snow
from Nature trying to reclaim
what was once its own

I pull over next to a lake
frozen in time wishing the memories
made here would do the same
I step out into the cold night air
The moonlight reflects off the lake and snow
I’m consumed by the white lights
of Heavens gates welcoming me to a better life
as my body stiffens and hands go numb

I stare up at the barely visible stars
from the moons blinding power
and pray to a God that isn't there
for one to fall into the distant
silhouettes of the mountains
to wish for a life long gone
and spread across the lake
so he’ll always be here
to return to me

My eyes begin to sting
as the wind screams at me to blink
I ignore its warnings
refusing to miss a moment
knowing my prayers are lost
on a old man with his hearing aid turned off
but I’m still searching for a miracle

I see the outline of a boy
sitting crosslegged in the middle of the street
steadily holding his camera
to capture the world around him
A coldness flows through my chest
like feeling ice water travel down your throat
making its way to its prison
and my eyes begin to water
but my tear ducts are as frozen as the lake

Unable to ignore the screams any longer
I blink allowing the wind to win
The moment is gone
as I search the empty road
for the apparition of the boy
I once knew

I’m alone
