Knock Me Down
I know all about defeat
And losing it all
Start from the beginning
Go from a walk to a crawl
All hard work erased
Time spent, thrown away
Can't be taken back
So I reflect on the past
On what I might have learned
That will help to stand again
When history returns,
Mistakes repeated, how they've burned
A hole through my ego,
Thrashed my narcissism
Left in tatters on the sidewalk
To be stepped on, tight in rhythm
Like a metronome, clock is ticking
Wind blows, shreds are floating away
Catch as many as I can, try to piece them back together
But they no longer fit, this puzzle like a buried treasure
I wish I could find a map to all the pieces that I'm needing
To ascend once again and put a stop to this receding
Time in the spotlight is now gone, memory is fleeting
But the animal inside of me is ravenously feeding
On this weakness
This bleakness
The scythe swings to reap this
Take it back to the beyond
That's what I've wanted all along
I'll go on until I'm strong
Enough to know what's right from wrong
And reach the place where I belong
As I stand tall above the throng
But first I need to take another bat to the knees
So I'll be crippled and unable to rise to my feet
Beat me down until I'm broken, humbled, and bitter
I will get right back up, I won't let myself wither
I'm not much of a sitter, not the runt of the litter
Try to keep me down, but know that I am not a quitter
There will be no surrender until I can't lift a finger
And even then, you would have to stop my breathing first
But be warned, you'll need wards, even then I'll still linger
Or be shorn and then torn, last breath I utter is a curse
