So Alone

The playground was full today,
The monkey bars had no space,
The slide was backed up,
The hop-scotch had a line,
Kickball and handball had enough players,
One extra would just make it no fun and an odd number.
The library was empty though,
Empty except for one.
A book in hand, turning the pages with a growling tummy,
Tears decorated the carpeted floor as she hid behind the shelves.
How much did it hurt little girl?
To listen to the laughter and not be apart? To watch behind the tree as they played so joyously?
To play alone?
Where did your smile go? Where has your innocence escaped to?
As you play this game of mystery and imagination in a world that cannot hurt, when will you come back?
They say your head is in the clouds, you're a dreamer and the music and lights play behind your eyes.
And as you open your bedroom door, the only time reality ever invades your world,
These same eyes water, a haunted smile seared on your lips as a silent sob escapes.
And down,
Down,
Down you go, distraught and hollow.
Eyes filled with pain and suddenly your world begins to crumble.
Please tell me little girl,
Where did you go? And who is this person that has stolen your place?
