Image for the poem A Mother

A Mother's Nightmare

Her blonde fro glowed letting the whole world know
That she's nappy and happy and unafraid to let it show
She knows that she's shining as bright as the sun
And that she's also the envy of almost everyone

Her young son is looked at with disdain and as a threat
Causing him immense pain even though he isn't even five yet
Considered a threat solely based off of the color of his skin
It's two thousand eighteen and the racism still has no end

So she sits contemplating on how to keep him safe
The thought of losing him makes her heart feel chafe
It breaks everytime that Frontline news reports another child's death
Because it makes her envision his ending by taking his last breath
