Prayer for Mercy
When asked who,
would I travel back in time to meet?
A frivolous question to to play with
To help a conversation
I might think of
a great writer like Hemingway or Dostoevsky or Shakespeare
a great musician/songwriter like Lennon or Bach or Cohen
A great painter/sculptor, Van Gogh or Picasso or Michelangelo or Rodin
or further back
a great figure from history such as King Arthur or Jesus
Jung, Plato, Solomon, Thomas, Auden, Yeats...
I have no doubt that all would grace me
And what learnings and insights might enrich a life
But in honesty, if the choice were there truly there, and it could be real,
I pray I could go back in years I’ve lived and re-meet the one I love, now too late in life where paths are not together.
I would forgo all other wisdom
And simply ask for Mercy

That's certainly a tough, but important question if the opportunity could actually arise. Nice choice of historical figures to meet. Overall, I enjoyed your poem.

Thank you. In reality it’s only the last two lines that are the poem. The rest is the answer I gave to someone who asked me that question. In answering it the poem lines are the answer I really meant.
