The Favorite of My Children

Can we ever love one child more?
Can one be better than the rest?
They are all our children
And we love them so
One poem is strong and athletic
A star on the field
The hero of the game
One is studious
A lover of knowledge
An intellectual in the making
Yet another child is an artist
Spreading color with words
Sculpting away at marble
Happy alone in the studio
Another poem is a deep thinker
Of philosophy and religion
A seeker of wisdom
Yet another still, an outdoorsman
Hiking trails, enjoying nature
Just to be in the woods
Is more than enough
For this poem
Yes, we love them all
They are strong and beautiful
Each can stand on their own
We have developed them that way
But we keep a dark secret
As parents of such outstanding children
We have learned to kill our babies
The ugly, the weak, those with flaws
However, we keep their memories in a trunk
A name, a sweater, a word or phrase
We use them later for our new babies
To help them grow healthy
To become strong and bright
This is how we raise our children
Can a parent truly love one child
More than another or could a poet
Ever do the same?
