Letting The Fire Burn Out

Even after all this time
And all the things we think we’ve learned
It’s hard to forget the fire we shared
So hot it burned us away from each other

Are you awake tonight and wandering memories streets
And wondering how it could have ever happened to you and me
That we’d forget the way into each other’s arms
Just when we needed to know the way the most

It seems wrong to me somehow
Especially in the night
When tears would flow or laughter ring
And secrets would be held up to the light
A soft white candlelight
Or the blazing fury of the fire that we shared
It burned us both away from each other
And left us alone in the cold daylight

We still live in the same little city these days
We’re even in the same small neighborhood
But we don’t see much of each other anymore
It’s kind of funny how that goes

There’s sorrow behind the smiles we share now when we do meet
It’s the sorrow for what we had and what might have been
And for the way that we let go
When we got scared of all the heat

We let the fire burn us both away
Away from each other
Afraid to melt into each other
But are we happier alone
