Frigid Mistakes

Promising words were whispered,
and carried along the breeze.
Though the fire within us was roaring,
the wind left us cold and empty.
We were forced to find warmth within
our misguided views of reality.
We should have known from the past
that it wasn't easy to thaw a frozen heart.
Yet we still rushed forward;
our eyes filled with envy as we grasped onto every possibility.
We dived off the edge
without questioning what laid at the bottom.
We were unprepared,
and soon enough, we were drowning.
It wasn't long before we began to wonder
how we were now colder than we had ever been to start with.
