through a sash window

he stood facing out of his window
of his room he held his back to it

he watched the opposite pavement
like a gull casting

he saw every shoe worn
travelling

he noted the trouser length variation
alter

he noticed shoes falter
due to fear

he saw the attempted smiles
fail inside before being born

he felt people cry inside
holding something to land the shoe            forwards past     please pass without

noticing
no one is breathing
