he stood facing out of his window
of his room he held his back to it
he watched the opposite pavement
like a gull casting
he saw every shoe worn
travelling
he noted the trouser length variation
alter
he noticed shoes falter
due to fear
he saw the attempted smiles
fail inside before being born
he felt people cry inside
holding something to land the shoe forwards past please pass without
noticing
no one is breathing
