OPEN YOUR EYES.

“Hello Sir, I’m Dr Ross
I have come to talk to you about your loss
I’m sorry, I only have a few minutes free
Would you be so kind as to follow me?”

He’s taking me to see Betty I’m so bloody scared
The doctor verbally warns me to be prepared
“Not because your wife’s appearance is a mess
But she doesn’t look good, I must confess
Her face is discoloured, a little grey
Her natural colour is fading away
I will leave you two alone
If you need anything you can use that phone”

His bedside manners leave a lot to be desired
With communication skills like that he ought to be fired
Beautiful and at peace Betty lies there
Trembling, I walk towards her, pull up a chair
Reach out and take her gently by the hand
Around her wrist is an identification band
Her hand is ice cold to the touch
I want to warm it up so much
She has an empty tube running into her vein
She looks at peace, no longer in pain

Machines stand quiet, no nurses at her side
What had they been doing to my beautiful bride?
With quivering lips, tears flood my eyes
In-between hefty sobs and sighs
My voice whimpers “Oh Betty what am I to do?
How am I supposed to live without you?
Please don’t leave me in so much pain
Please baby, open your eyes again
Baby, baby, please wake up and rise
Please my darling open your eyes
Please my love, wake up and see
Come and see your son with me
Open your eyes, you cannot be dead
Please my love... lift up your head
You were the best thing to have come into my life
We have just started our future, you are my new wife
Why did your life taper off like hour glass sand?
Us being apart wasn’t planned
You were my true love, it was plain to see
Unfairly, you have been snatched away from me
You kept my hearts fire burning without a doubt
Now those flames have been rapidly doused out
You were my one and only
Now I feel isolated and lonely
I can NEVER imagine not being with you again
For the rest of my life I will live in pain
The sun again will never rise and shine
Into this dark, empty life of mine
Grey clouds will forever rain on me
Until I die and for eternity”
