They Do Not Understand Me
My parents made it clear
That they do not like you.
I always choose to steer
You away from it all. The blue
Skies that you give me do not
Make them get the top view
Into my life. They still taught
Me to respect myself,
But they do not get caught
Up in our story. The high shelf
They try to keep me on is just
Within your reach. I am no elf,
Hidden away. The trust
I give you, they do not know
What that is about. The dust
Collecting and adding up is so
Far beyond their understanding.
I am not within the status quo.
I am jumping and landing
Beyond their touch.
I cannot keep on standing
When they keep their clutch
On me tight like a little girl
And breakable doll. Too much
Restrictions. I am a pearl,
Not a clam or a hard shell.
Let me mingle and swirl
In freedom. I have been to hell
And back so that everybody
Understands when I do not yell.
That they do not like you.
I always choose to steer
You away from it all. The blue
Skies that you give me do not
Make them get the top view
Into my life. They still taught
Me to respect myself,
But they do not get caught
Up in our story. The high shelf
They try to keep me on is just
Within your reach. I am no elf,
Hidden away. The trust
I give you, they do not know
What that is about. The dust
Collecting and adding up is so
Far beyond their understanding.
I am not within the status quo.
I am jumping and landing
Beyond their touch.
I cannot keep on standing
When they keep their clutch
On me tight like a little girl
And breakable doll. Too much
Restrictions. I am a pearl,
Not a clam or a hard shell.
Let me mingle and swirl
In freedom. I have been to hell
And back so that everybody
Understands when I do not yell.
