A stargazer's moment of clarity

I felt dizzy momentarily, had to lie down
When the reality came down like a house of cards
Hit me like a sledgehammer in the teeth
I never knew I had a blind side until someone exposed it
When the blood flowing wouldn't stop
I knew what ultimately is true for everyone
The gleam of hope everyone waits for
Is dead like starlight
Still, everyone counts the stars in the night sky
But the stars are dead
Only the light lives on
Making fools out of us.

Worried sick to the stomach
We wait for the good days
Some think action brings consequences
They try to act on their wishes
Some are called terrorists because they can't speak English
Some get a cable show promoting God and peace
And they will have you killed if you have any doubts about their truth.
The rest only wait and watch
As their very own, personal apocalypse obliterates them
And they keep counting the stars
Until all the dots in the sky die off.

I have stopped counting.
I know the lights are dead.
The light was dead even before I was born
We killed the light.
And for all those hopefuls, who believe there is still light in us
Will have their hopes shattered soon enough.
So I ask them, stop counting the dots in the skies of your mind
Hoping one day, you will finally reach one of them
Rather go outside, and count the stars in the black sky
At least you won't have to see the darkness all around
And the good news is, you already know these stars are dead.
