A Journey

A long, dusty road where
many feet have, for years, tread
walking alone and wondering when
the road may come to its bitter end...

I was one of them, yes, I was too
wondering when my end might come
and when the sunset and I would meet at last
and leave the dreary journey in the past.

Walking ever on, on tired feet I did,
and for company a disparaging heart
that taught me well to walk on
whilst fearing the fall of dark.

A journey made for two but done by one
for who knows how many years.
We all have but to carry on
and on and on, never knowing any number but one.

But by miracles happening, we performed.
Our necks, through trial of time, stiffened
so that suffering hearts could
wearily carry on with heads held high to belie.

But this was merely a simple disguise
to hide the longing behind our eyes
and in the midst of the dust that did rise
somehow we meet one more to walk by our sides.

And I met him, I did, those hazel eyes
did come along my journey for two made by one
and he took my hand
and the road, suddenly, didn't seem so long.

Out of the blue, out of thin air he came
to give me his heart for mine in exchange
and with tender voice he did sing
one melody sounding softly in my ear,

"You are no longer walking alone, my dear.
Come near to me and let my love
be thine guide that inspires your strides
that are needed to take us along this ride.

And oh, how sweet it sounds
when Heaven opens up and reaches down
through angel sound and joy abounds
with hands entwined, we rise with wings above the dusty ground.

Two hearts combined to make something
so much sweeter than any wine.
A journey to one sunset line
made by two hearts, forever and always, aligned.
