I wait alone
I wait alone for my lover
I wait upon my bed
the nights are oh so lonely
and the world is full of dread.
my lover’s eyes were sorrowful
my lover’s flesh was warm
I swore I’d be her refuge
and keep her from all harm
the dealer came like anthrax
the dealer’s flesh was cold
he swore he’d be her refuge
and stop her growing old
the dealer he was beautiful
he played her with his tune
he showed her tricks and bits and then
he showed her how to use
first she met the dragon
she smelt his foetid breath
then, impaled upon the needle,
she did the dance of death
my lover’s skin was smooth like ice
my lover’s voice was kind
my lover she was gentle but
she left her love behind
the dealer put her on the street
to work for what he gave
she was just some little cripple girl
he kept back in his cave
I’m waiting for my lover
I know she’s coming back
when I lie here on my mattress
with nothing to unpack
my lover she will come with me
and never come to harm
her pain will fade away with me, like
the needles in her arm
when my love comes back to me
from death, as she will, I know
we’ll be together evermore
as we were so long ago
I wait upon my bed
the nights are oh so lonely
and the world is full of dread.
my lover’s eyes were sorrowful
my lover’s flesh was warm
I swore I’d be her refuge
and keep her from all harm
the dealer came like anthrax
the dealer’s flesh was cold
he swore he’d be her refuge
and stop her growing old
the dealer he was beautiful

then, impaled upon the needle,
she did the dance of death
my lover’s skin was smooth like ice
my lover’s voice was kind
my lover she was gentle but
