The Edge of the Pier

The oncoming storm
Thrills the darkened skies
Birds sensing danger
They all begin to cry

All finding shelter
Except, of course, for me
On the edge of the pier
Standing above the sea

I take a deep breath
Lungs filling with moist air
I sit there all alone
A beautiful moment I won't share

Lightning strikes the water
The waves begin to churn
My desire for sweet death
Now in my heart burns

So easy it would be
Just to end it all
The salty ocean taking over
Breaking me in my fall

I slide closer to the edge
My feet dangling over
Gravity pulls at them
As if a playful lover

I look below me
And see the tide's still out
This fall would surely end my life
And hush my thoughts of doubt

I keep staring at the water
I keep staring at my grave
The rain begins to pour
...Must be the Angels, crying for the brave

Their tears sting like bees
Against my chilled skin
I shut my teary eyes
And ask forgiveness of my sins....
