Immigrant Girls

this is just another war zone.
you weren’t the first to take my “virginity”
the flights make me too exhausted to run.
you hustle, i hustle.
i was naive but mostly hungry.
don’t think you scarred me,
you’re just another stab.

i laughed each time he flashed the pistol,
baby, don’t you know that’s my childhood?
tear gas is what puts me to sleep.
bombs wilder than Lush.

choppas cloud the skies we fly in.
only thing i have from my countries,
are the drugs you want me to sell.
at least i have something.

he told me they wanted to see melanin now,
in such cold weather you need a lil colour.
he promised everything he did
would get my parents citizenship,
and keep laws I couldn't understand
far, far from me.
as far as my countries.

longer I spent with him,
and all his internet “friends”
I realized,
i’m just doing what passes as legal
back home.

future hubby, i ask that
you love me,
you honour me,
and you give me my future
something they can’t give me
back home.
