Nothing Left To Say
I spoke to you
One last time today
And you asked me
Why I was going with him
There was hurt in your eyes when
I said it was because
I love you
I told you that you
Never really understood why
I reached out to you
And why I tried so hard to ease
The pain that edged your heart
I tried to explain
That you would never understand
Until you left your past behind
And could see me as something more substantial
Than just a substitute for a memory
I said that someday you would
Be able to accept my love
And finally open up to me
Then we could both be happy
Until then
I have my own life to live
As I turned to walk away
I half expected you to say
“But I will be ready soon
If only you will wait a little longer”
Instead you replied with silence
And I wondered how something so empty
Could say so much
One last time today
And you asked me
Why I was going with him
There was hurt in your eyes when
I said it was because
I love you
I told you that you
Never really understood why
I reached out to you
And why I tried so hard to ease
The pain that edged your heart
I tried to explain
That you would never understand
Until you left your past behind
And could see me as something more substantial
Than just a substitute for a memory
I said that someday you would
Be able to accept my love
And finally open up to me
Then we could both be happy
Until then
I have my own life to live
As I turned to walk away
I half expected you to say
“But I will be ready soon
If only you will wait a little longer”
Instead you replied with silence
And I wondered how something so empty
Could say so much
