A better night's sleep
I left you on the sofa,
Because I know,
After four years,
If I were to wake you up
When you were snoring that loudly,
The grumpiest bear in the world
Would have stomped off to bed,
Been unbearable and snarled good-night,
Not touching me.
Usually though,
You wake up after an hour
Or two,
Stumble into bed,
Wrap me in your bear hug,
Your breathing slows and evens and
Until I fall asleep,
I forget I was mad at you.
You mumble in your sleep,
It's cute,
I smile,
Kiss the closest part of you,
Mumble 'i love you'
In the dark,
To no one.
We both sleep peacefully.
But, last night,
I left you on the sofa.
Woke up often,
Wondering why
My grumpy teddy bear
Wasn't annoying me
With his snores,
Or waking me up when he rolled over,
Or randomly kissing
My shoulderblades
At four o'clock in the morning.
You stayed on the sofa.
The first I knew
Was when I heard the kettle boil,
And you humming,
Because you'd had a better night's sleep.
Because I know,
After four years,
If I were to wake you up
When you were snoring that loudly,
The grumpiest bear in the world
Would have stomped off to bed,
Been unbearable and snarled good-night,
Not touching me.
