This Lullaby

This numb holds to my jaw like your eyes to my eyes
Keeping my words oh so cold inside my burning throat
What would I give to open my mouth and shout this out
I would give the breath inside my lungs, and my blackened soul

Tear this out from my chest, This apathy and foolish indifference
Tear this out from my mouth, This curse and ignorant plea
Tear this out from my hand, This heart and reckless abandon
Tear this out from my mind, This hope and prayer of a better day

This hourglass clings to my eyes, My voice is drowning in the sand
I’ve shouted this out to you so many times, Yet you stand so silently
I swear you’ve heard me, I swear you’ve seen me, I swear you know me
But I forget…You don’t belong to me, Your heart is not mine to lose

How precious were your wrists, Clinging to my beaten shoulders
How precious were your legs, Clinging to my broken legs
How precious were your eyes, Clinging to my blinded eyes
How precious were your lips, Clinging to my bloodied lips

I can’t let you go, I can’t let this go, I never meant for you to leave
I didn’t mean for this to turn into our song, But this lullaby sings endlessly
I can’t forgive you, I can’t forget you, You never meant for me to need to
I didn’t mean for this to turn into your song, But your voice replaces my own
