Oh here is where ambiguity is very interesting.
"the phallus opens" could mean that the phallus itself is opening, what a horrible thought!
"the phallus opens" of course means it is opening a tunnel.

Interesting how reader can see new meanings the writer is not expecting.
My focus was in the end - the ambiguos idea of opening tunnels (physical thing) in a non-physical thing (mind).
