Masked Dance

There is a ball tonight
And everyone is here
The women are in flowing dresses
And their wings are pampered and plucked
The men show of expensive suits
Talk of accomplishments and prizes
And everyone is drinking
They are having a good time

The priest arrives
His mask placed over his eyes
Black and white
Yin and yang
And he watches everyone indulge in sin
Tucks his cross under his shirt
And happily joins in

The mayor and his wife
Arrive at separate times
The mayor feeds the lovely masked women
Glass after glass of wine
Bubbly and pale
And his wife flaunts her short dress
And bejeweled fox mask

This masquerade is completely anonymous
Secrets are passed like friendly handshakes
The only way you can tell
Who these people are
Are by beautiful wings
Either pressed closed under overcoats
Or open for everyone to see
Our wings are who we are

Eventually the large bell rings midnight
And everyone heads home with taboo lovers
To spend the night enjoying each other
Because at the ball
Secrets are made and kept
Tightly held in claw like hands
And not shared until the next dance
