POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Helpless
There's got to be something more I can do
Than just stand here and watch as they take you
Through the angry sirens, the ambulance door
Is the only thing keeping me on my feet
If I stare into the lights just long enough
Maybe I will just fall asleep
and wake up in a world where it's all right
Than just stand here and watch as they take you
Through the angry sirens, the ambulance door
Is the only thing keeping me on my feet
If I stare into the lights just long enough
Maybe I will just fall asleep
and wake up in a world where it's all right

Composed, Impassioned
Sing us a song, darling,
tell us of your woes.
Open your mouth and wail to the world
what it’s like
to be you.
Join the chorus, darling,
drown among those woe-ridden voices
imparting their misery upon us,
we poor dispassionate souls.
tell us of your woes.
Open your mouth and wail to the world
what it’s like
to be you.
Join the chorus, darling,
drown among those woe-ridden voices
imparting their misery upon us,
we poor dispassionate souls.

True Colors
Child, open your eyes.
The time has come for you to see
the world’s true colors, true glory
(or lack thereof.)
The time has come for you to see
the world’s true colors, true glory
(or lack thereof.)

Endless Test
I must attest
That during this quest
I'm feeling depressed and restless
Therefore I confess to you
Therefore I request of you,
Worry not about my mess,
Let my lead my life and rest
So that I may soon pass the endless test.
You know I've tried to quiet my mind
And leave my feelings and fears behind,
But these thoughts inside my brain
Split my chest, release the pain
And I am drained and I can't sleep
And so the morning leaves me weak,
yet I still wake, dread mistake...
I don't think I'll take the endless test.

Past the Grey
I know where you've been
I've seen it too
the place where the sky is never blue
but I, like you, can also say
"I have passed the grey."
The Earth moves far and life goes fast
Yet these nights don't seem to pass
But I, like you, can also say
"I have passed the grey."
Do you hear the music
That pretty sound?
It’s telling you to stick around
So you, like I, can also say
"I have passed the grey."
The Earth moves far and life goes fast
Yet these nights don't seem to pass
But you and I, we both can say...

Last Words
Come to me, let me see you.
Allow me to draw my last breath
as your fingers smooth my thinning hair.
Despite my failing vision, I see
in your eyes
the memories from all of time
and so
I ask you not to weep.
All that I need right now
is a strong arm to hold me,
to guide me into the unknown
where I will spend eternity.
Allow me to draw my last breath
as your fingers smooth my thinning hair.
Despite my failing vision, I see
in your eyes
the memories from all of time
and so
I ask you not to weep.
All that I need right now

to guide me into the unknown
where I will spend eternity.

Join Me in my Coup
Paper shreds are lying all around on the ground
A silence falls across the room
I'm all alone here with my pain and my brain
Has left the station on a long-distance train
Someone save me from my mind
Screams echo round the corner
I know you hear them too
I know they speak to you
Join me in my coup
We will make them see
They will set us free
Come and let's break through
Join me in my coup
I feel my thoughts going south to the ocean
Where they will drown without a sound
I'm all alone here with my pain...

Closure
I always said that one day when we’re old
we’d look back and remember
the way we used to tear each other apart,
the words we flung at one another,
the pain I suffered at the hands of you,
the injury you underwent by me.
Here we are at last, at the end of all things
and all I want you to know is that I’d go through it again
to be here with you right now.
We made it, despite all odds, and I still know
how sure I was I’d never see you again
after exchanging insults with you in a run-down apartment,
or two years later when...

Where is she when you need her?
Where does she go in the middle of the night?
Pencil marks on a wooden table
Mistakes etched in for all time
Does she see the way you bite your lip
When you think of her and sigh?
She's not coming back
She's not coming back
Turn out the lamp, you might need it later
Feel your way through the house instead
Pick up the flashlight under the calendar
Use it to find the way to your bed
You can join the dogs outside,
go sing at the moon
Ask her when you’ll find someone ...

Until You Are No More
You were like any other human
In the most basic sense.
They dug a hole and placed you in it
When you were forty, and now all that remains
Are your bones.
If “mortal” means your flesh has rotted,
Then you were.
But everyone knows your name, your life, your work.
Even today’s children sing “Imagine” and “Help!,”
despite not knowing how the words sounded
when they came from your mouth.
The people, they speak of you every day.
They remember you, your words, your music, your contribution,
And they will never...

Lost in Your Eyes
A hand twitches.
Breath catches in a windpipe.
A pulse jumps, and someone forgets to blink.
It was glances at first;
sneaky, deniable, I was just staring into space—
but then the stars aligned
and the glances did too.
Now they are caught in each other’s eyes
and neither looks away.
Neither wants to look away—
The mere thought feels traitorous.
One of them smiles, a quirk of the lip
that invites a shy wave from the other
which leads to a silent promise:
See you later?
And they do, always and...

Movie Hero
I wish I could cry like a movie hero,
with traitorous tears escaping down my cheeks
though my words stay strong and sure.
I wish my voice hadn’t broken along with my heart,
because I am not a movie hero who must
endure hardship to get a happy ending.
Is my happiness guaranteed? The sun dries up every
rain puddle but I cannot speak in metaphors.
I am alive and have a life that I must live
whether it ends in happiness or not. I fear
the night but not for a horrible memory
that proves my bravery
but because I fear the...
