POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Ode to the Politician
My eyes have reached a reprise
And are no longer disillusioned
To the intricate lies… in which your
Mouth speaks….
A greater truth is cast
into the not so distant past
Some of us are open to a greater understanding
For which you wish to lay dormant
The awakening of souls suppressed
Cannot lay sleeping in her restlessness
She must speak out of the truth…
in which you chose to disguise in words
…of liberation
Truth is… freedom is bound
Spoon fed lies from the beginning of time
As you mar our histories
You make...

Veteran Estranged
In your face I see wisdom
Embedded in every crevice and crease
What stories you must hold?
What secrets lie behind your eyes?
You stare off into the distance
Two subdued wells
Of infinite knowledge
When I look at you I cannot see
The bottom of your soul
You are not shallow or transparent
You cannot be read so easily
Yet people think they know
Your type
As you make camp on the bench
With a bottle of booze
A cigarette in your hand
In your worn out battle fatigues
You intrigue me
Surely you have lived many lives...
Embedded in every crevice and crease
What stories you must hold?
What secrets lie behind your eyes?
You stare off into the distance
Two subdued wells
Of infinite knowledge
When I look at you I cannot see

Dust Storm
I feel a kindred soul
To the dust beneath my toes
We both know how it feels
To be walked on
Swept up
Thrown away
We aren’t so different
Both searching for corners
Of peace
Resting where we can
Until life makes us feel
Like we must move on
Many days we wait
The dust and I
For a gentle breeze
To sway us on down the way
Maybe we will find
A greener pasture
Or a place to gather
With like souls
Sometimes I want to be
Scooped up in a dustpan
And blown across the prairies
Until I find so much
Of myself...
To the dust beneath my toes
We both know how it feels
To be walked on
Swept up
Thrown away
We aren’t so different
Both searching for corners
Of peace
Resting where we can
Until life makes us feel
Like we must move on

Breathe
Ashes of yesterday’s cigarette
Smeared into the earth
Forgotten…
The inhale
The exhale
The tiny light aglow
Waiting just to die
Toxicity lingering on your lips
As you close the door behind you
Lungs cry out
In smoke filled cavities
Expansion met with resistance
The residue washed
from tar stained mouths
masking her lethal existence
Just one more puff
Just one more drag
Teaching us the power
Of the inhale
The exhale
We have forgotten how
…to just simply breathe….
Smeared into the earth
Forgotten…
The inhale
The exhale
The tiny light aglow
Waiting just to die
Toxicity lingering on your lips
As you close the door behind you
Lungs cry out
In smoke filled cavities
Expansion met with resistance
The residue washed
from tar stained mouths
masking her lethal existence
Just one more puff
Just one more drag
Teaching us the power
Of the inhale
The exhale
We have forgotten how
…to just simply breathe….

Too often we’ve settled
For superficial
Acknowledgment
Confusing it with real love
As we’re left picking up the pieces
Of our naïve hearts
In the polluted unsheathed sheets
Of a stranger’s bed
Wondering why we could not love
Or be loved
I want to awaken
In an accustomed bed
With more than just
The impression of a heart
Beside me
Real love takes time
Love was a stranger
Until you climbed inside me,
Understanding the depths of my soul
Occupying every crevice of every crease
Of my existence
And...
