Poet Introduction
I have long been fascinated by the sonnet. This form, which I remain fixated by, uses the power of rhyme and iambic pentameter, when well structured, to express a story in a mere fourteen lines.
OBSERVATIONAL POEM

Readjustment's Request
The traits that form a personality
may undergo a fundamental shift
and leave persona and its mind adrift
replace the certain with uncertainty.
Remaining narrative – fragmentary –
the Psyche, it experiences rift,
interaction, much changed, may fail to lift,
a person lacking former levity.
If such a shift is formative, all fine,
(require sound thought and mood to intertwine)
a forward step, instead of stumbling block,
a readjustment to the inner clock.
No doctor, drug, prevents catastrophe,
grant such folk time to...

A Day in the Life
Depot of Haloperidol today
and chitchat session with a Mental Nurse.
I promise you I would not wish this curse
on any living person, come what may.
Some music, snooze, a snack, some small delay,
self-medicate on five percent or worse,
with that let’s try and cut the story terse;
I want the mind to function, not decay.
Haste, here come memories of all my sins!
Can I make recompense before begins
The Lord to count, The Devil slyly claim,
the latter stating me not him to blame?
Would any good, the bad intent outweigh?
...

Double Jeopardy
The paths of folly and of wisdom meet
once actuality is cast aside -
without a well-formed history as guide
the motive causes cannot be discrete.
A psychiatric record may complete
the judgments that profession needs decide
this does not mean that this will coincide
with commonly held views of man on street.
If public, private life both overlap
a second jury judge with hammer tap
and thus appears a novel Nemesis
making actu’l, if not mental, crisis.
Well, ‘such is life’, we have been heard to say,
we don’t recall it...

Dichotomy
Whenever serendipity occurs,
or opposite, misfortunes seem some snare,
to count this fate makes luckless folk despair;
both part of greater plan The Lord confers.
The parable, instruction’s tale recurs,
requires dispensed with some parental flair,
to teach not what, but how to think – compare –
the first scleroses as the mind inters.
The child may be the father of the man,
that if development proceeds to plan,
then man may be the father of the child –
a contradiction, but the words not wild –
the former shuns parental...

Uncertainty
Catch a star within your eye
never tell a knowing lie
hold the magic of a copper band
steady self on sinking sand
and discover lessons taught
that make all minds less fraught.
Pace the paths that grant eternity
then returning full of certainty
explain the secrets of the universe
and how turn pig’s ear to silken purse
then telling fully wrong from right
banish darkness of the night.
But this would halt all mystery
abolishing uncertainty;
such is the stuff of heaven and hell
and it is here on earth we dwell; ...

Exclusion or Inclusion
Is there a reason for a broken mind,
in Psyche’s nature, nurture, maybe both,
has thought transgressed some fundamental oath,
would comprehending cause help solve the bind?
Some think the medication is unkind,
can make cognition idiotic, sloth,
but absence makes for aberrations growth;
an equilibrium so hard to find.
To ask equality, to ask too much?
How could the norm equate that with poor thought?
To ask forgiveness, or for pity’s touch,
assumes equality with common sort.
Such damaged shards of this humanity
are...

OBSERVATIONAL POEM

Identity
Alone through choice, through time, geography,
but communality in memory,
there is a strong urge to alienate,
but opposite wish not to isolate.
There must be some magic suspending life,
there must be some forces preventing strife,
coincidence can spark off trains of thought,
peace found at times, just as was always sought.
Advanced in years and still so quite naïve -
such mystery - uncertain to believe,
no wish to run the show, or be in charge,
but wish for change, present stasis to barge.
Labels of left and right, useless flotsam, ...

MISCELLANEOUS POEM

Novice Supplication
It used to be the case, that come what may,
a vodka coke at six, to start the day.
It doesn’t take a seer or genius
to figure out descent that followed this.
The alcohol, a habit I now shun
then others which I used to count as fun
I’ve cast aside for better or for worse –
one thing for sure – this doesn’t hurt my purse.
But it is traits of mind I need to change
if I with honesty wish rearrange
this mind that’s me, this personality,
that is the cause of its own fallacy.
Grant me the strength to see where I’ve gone wrong,
humility...

Pebbles in the Wishing Well
I wish each faith much peace and unity.
I wish each government prosperity.
I wish each child of man a happy life.
I wish each man and woman lack of strife.
I wish each crop is fed with sun and rain.
I wish that doctors learn to ease all pain.
I wish that work is blessed with fitting wage.
I wish that war and famine cease to rage.
These wishes, they have not been granted me.
I do not wish on all, adversity.
These are my wishes born of innocence,
but I have known, as you, experience.
The former wishes for Utopia,
the latter plans,...

Patient's Protest
I have a problem.
Let us start with that.
A severe psychiatric disability.
I don’t particularly wish to share too much…
but…
Care in the Community…
I prefer society to hospital,
although of both I do not know
which prefers me least.
If only the tablets and injections…
would, so to speak…
have desired effect…
I’ve tried my own solutions,
treating fire with fire,
balanced trick of alchemy.
But then some years ago and still…
the haloperidol…
straitjacket of psychiatry…
...

A Broken Mind
Purpose is a part of function -
to function, a necessity -
each person plays a varied role
within society.
Its tributaries gather
and its rivers roll
a myriad of individuals -
and each one has its soul.
Cast not an evil eye
on those who can’t participate,
God didn’t cast all equally -
for scant reason, some may fulminate.
Nature isn’t always kind,
perhaps it’s in our genes,
and some - so envious of you -
to be purposeful, the stuff of dreams.

Reconsidering Mania
Perhaps one adds to the happiness of the World
by being miserable -
let me explain.
There is only so much joy to go around
and it is far from shared equally
so, taking too much for yourself may deprive others.
Feeling good may be relative,
and some easily feel better than someone else,
if someone else is unhappy.
Then there is the concept of schadenfreude,
some taking pleasure at others’ misfortunes -
perhaps, being unhappy makes others happy.
I could tell you about why I’m feeling miserable,
but it might just be that happy...

let me explain.
