POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I started writing poems over 40 years ago and have never stopped!
MAKE ME SMILE
Your ignorance
I can understand
without hearing the stories,
or walking on the land.
Without ever feeling
the spirit of place
which touches deeply
an inner space
where connection to
everything can be found,
breathing the air,
knowing the ground,
how the tide rises,
which way water flows,
the fact that everything
comes and goes.
Until you tune in,
listen for a while
your ignorant remarks
just make me smile!

SO MUCH...
So much was
taken away,
watching as the
sky turned grey,
looking around to
see who was there,
wanting a witness to
share in the loss.
So much was
given so long ago,
sacrifices, offerings,
symbols to show
faith and devotion
to something more,
sometimes opening a
door to an experience.
So much was
there waiting,
for whoever
stopped hesitating,
took the lead,
shone the light,
spread their wings, took
flight and soared.

BEING ALIVE
Whatever happens
it'll be ok,
we are creatures
with amazing ways
to adapt to change,
to overcome,
what at first can be
thought by some
to be a disaster,
a catastrophe,
had to happen so
other things could be
brought about for
the greater good.
We often think of
could and should,
but really what
shall be shall be,
when we take
the time to see,
look at things
positively,
we realize it'll be ok,
we will cope with
whatever way
things turn out,

FLOTSAM
Walking barefoot
through cold wet sand,
Orion’s belt sparkles above,
calm seas softly sigh
as plovers cry the call of night.
Billy hides in fright in bed
his pillow over his head,
she said she’d be back soon,
she left this afternoon.
Climbing smooth boulders,
resting feet amongst broken shells,
clouds hide the Southern Cross,
branches sway with rustling leaves,
foxes scavenge through overflowing bins.
Billy gets up, turns on the light,
she never goes out alone at night,

THE SHIFTING
She saw him lying
in the yard
watched the others
who found it hard
to move him from
where he lay
she knew there was
something she had to say.
She approached the scene
with footsteps slow
as the others panicked,
they didn't know
that all was going
to be just right,
as again he went
back to the light.
Taking a while to
become aware,
she watched as he
realized she was there.
Tapped his shoulder
as they began to lift,
to remind him that
it was time to shift.

A DIFFERENT LIGHT
Yes it was me,
I was the one
chosen to share
the morning sun,
I heard the voice
through other lips
was touched by
invisible fingertips.
The songs selected
lingered there
amongst the pages
and tangled hair.
I’d had the dream
years before
the meanings
laced in metaphor
able to unlock,
open the door,
setting me off on
a path to explore.
Putting in play,
a script unwritten
improvised with a
touch of intuition,
a rhythmic humming
mystery dance,...

KNOCK ON THE DOOR
Boats overflowing
with refugees,
human cargo contained
on the open seas,
escaping from what
we see on TV,
headed for the so
called land of the free.
Borders guarded
by boats on patrol,
an invisible line that
only maps show,
turning pleading
people around,
defending the nations’
territorial ground.
Sitting in comfort
it’s easy to say,
“We don’t want ‘em,
turn ‘em all away,”
Terra Nullius
exists no more,
now you have to
knock on the door.

CALM THE CORE
Resting back against a tree
at the edge of the wood,
remembering a time when
everything was good,
watching the sun
feeding the earth,
taking part in the cycle
of death and rebirth.
Whilst in the middle
of the forest
where a small patch
was clear,
a circle, a spiral
of light did appear,
it radiated
casting shadows long,
drawing in the
weak and strong.
They woke and wondered
as they walked unled,
each of them following
the one ahead,
over the creeks,
past all they had...

THE STORM
The cool, crisp, fresh air,
thunder,
lightning,
someone's there,
"The Sky is Crying"
and I know
it's watching me.
A flash of light,
a creak of beams.
the pouring rain,
the vivid dreams.
The eerie sounds
throughout the place,
the rhythmic pattern,
the steady pace !
The sudden roar
of rolling sound,
it pounds the air,
vibrates the ground.
I lie in bed
taking it in
the sky's so powerful
when a storm begins.

THE STRANGER
On the high tide line
where the mangrove sway,
in a hollow trunk
his sleeping body lay,
waiting for water
to lap at his feet,
knowing very soon
a stranger he would meet.
Someone to take him
beyond the mist,
mark his name
off the list
of ones who'd gone,
but again came back
to fulfill a need,
gain a lack.
The stranger walked
through sun and rain,
into the darkness
to heal his pain,
over mountains
for days and nights,
until he saw bright
dancing lights,
hovering...

THE LIGHT
Beside herself
she was that day,
when the light
went that way.
She wasn’t gone,
she was still there,
although part of her
floated in the air.
She couldn’t speak,
she couldn’t move,
she’d fallen into
another groove.
Out of sync in
a different time,
until she heard
a distant rhyme
Singing softly
through her ear,
telling her there
was nothing to fear
As no one knew
what to do or say,
when the light
went that way.

BEING
Being here and there at once,
being more than one,
being part of everything
from the earths' core to the sun.
Being here as a structured
shape, emanating form,
having breathe and blood,
lungs and heart to keep it warm.
Being there is hard to define,
it's different for us all,
some enter when dreaming,
some by just staring at a wall.
Being here and being there,
being in-between
aware or disengaged,
choosing what is seen.
