A Sudden Sluice of Sea-Ice
The kid drops his bucket and spade / And climbs into the sun.” Nick Cave
Sea-ice shoals are spooned
Into surrogate vessels of feeling,
Tidal grief has sunk emotions
Girl at the point where the pier once lay
Could be disturbed moments away from
Sleeping with the fishes
I turn my back on the portentous vision
And paint the sky red with seagull blood
As diamonds plucked from expensive watches
Temporal is the temptation to crush auld crystal,
Tougher than slate, finger bone br/e/aker
They’d look beautiful abreast...

Poems Written on Seaside Postcards (collaboration with Casted_Runes)
Miss Wales, 1982
Oh dear, the palpable fear
News splashed like seagull shit.
The Fingering Wall beside the Fair -
Miss Wales, what did you do?
Giving head to a judge
Swallowed your pride
Senile, semen of bile,
Dethroned to whirl of waltzers.
Stiff sea breeze roughed her candy-floss hair.
Sauce for the Chips
Greetings from sunny Clacton!
This long weekend is on its way:
we met these swingers on the pier
and had our tea with them.
They’re down at the holiday camp, near
where your Becky used...

driftwood
three. four. five.
i gazed, transfixed,
at the cloudless night sky
as their lights went out.
six. seven.
blackness thickened
as each guiding star
disappeared,
leaving only the memory
of its luminance.
though hypnotised by the moment,
it was time to leave.
cut off from land crew,
i would need to find my way back
before the last star faded.
eight. nine.

Atlantic
Eyes that whip the night
to leave stripes on the back
open wounds that the sea
etched with saline lick
eyes that eviscerate seagulls
swords and fish and sail
eyes that condescend
the horizontal lines of the landscape
eyes nailed to the cross of the poles
who sail a sea so dead
and slowly deep
that there are no eyes that can
see...

Old Men and the Sea
I’ve seen the fisherman,
that Papa Hemmingway once wrote about
and heard the tales that they’d spin out
at night when they had hung their purse seines
up to dry.
Did they speak of mermaids then
and one-eyed whales,
and willing Cuban whores
who'd rut for days?
Ah yes, they did,
But only to the gullible
who'd stand them drinks
in recompense for being swayed
within the magic of their words.
Oh, how these winking men,
these old salt-lying piscators,
were sly.

Song Of A Sea Siren
Can you hear her calling you, an old voice on the wind,
Listen to the haunting tones speaking of places you have been.
Whispering loudly, stretching out to you, from across the sea,
An ancient voice that will sing softly of your history.
Singing of your loneliness, your hunger and your pain.
Crying to you, 'Come unto me, in your heart I will remain.’
You feel the ribbons pulling you into her sheltering arms,
Knowing there is comfort you, in her beauty and her charms.
You see her face upon the winds and in the pouring rain,
You hear her...

A Pirate's Life
Canvas snapping in a southeastern wind,
Sun above and salt spray on me chin.
We make for Jamaica, our next port of call,
Montego Bay, so that we bypass the squall.
Aye, we be men of the sea, and secrets she keeps,
Pirates they call us, tis’ only treasure we seek.
The smell of the brine and the air tastes of salt,
When a ship comes in sight, we force them to halt.
If after a bloody battle, the ship is left for scrap,
All is commandeered from a well-executed attack.
We tie all captains to the mast, as their ships sank,

Motion
Shifting sands caressing winds rolling waves holding hands
Spectating accumulation of all nature’s crafty plans
Sea breezes spraying geysers misting observable water praying
Listening carefully hark what the carefree mother ocean is saying
Cauldrons of motion
An ever breaking salty potion
Gulls and swifts bring lofty commotion
Horizons fall and rise on tides of devotion
Bright star glares poking lens flairs
Scorching heat sand burning rough feet
Pungent sea growth but sweet breeze
Enough stimulation for bowed heads and...

Oceans
She is beautiful
Like all oceans are
Raging with a storm of dreams
She is calm
While the sun sets
Behind the horizon
We will forget
She kisses the sand
The rocks, the cliffs, the wall
She is indomitable
Like all oceans are
She is beautiful

Set you free
dew drops on the pine strands,
dried cones all over the sand,
it’s really hard to walk, or even to think of doing a headstand!
yet, it still draws me in,
setting me free of sin,
waves breaking in, and the call for a one exquisite swim!
feel the rays of the sun,
caress your skin, it’s fun,
days that we forget but rays soaked days aren’t for regret!
the crisp freshness of tomorrow,
emerges a soul from the shadows,
taking me away from the mysteries of sorrow!
truth to be told, oh yeah behold!
I’ve stopped...

Night Swim
Lit sandles on the wind
dancing in the sand
like candles
blowing out
then in
Your fingers stretching
from mine
as the tide catches
your fetching pride
everything's fine
yet the tingling warmth
your evaporating touch
says far too much
I breathe out
then in
dancing in the sand
like candles
blowing out
then in
Your fingers stretching
from mine
as the tide catches
your fetching pride
everything's fine
yet the tingling warmth
your evaporating touch
says far too much
I breathe out

Loose Lips
Listing prose off in the distance
glittering toes and steamy pistons
sinking below an untold cargo
hold
my hand out
creeping up your arm
in green misty premium roses
seeping like a clearing fog
a searing log leaping
through the waves of doubt
nearing your thumping cor
gripping your new bile heart
and tearing it out
with a new wild shout
closing your gap faster
everlasting master
a lurking shark
in inky rows
glittering toes and steamy pistons
sinking below an untold cargo
hold
my hand out
creeping up your arm
in green misty premium roses
seeping like a clearing fog
a searing log leaping
through the waves of doubt
nearing your thumping cor
