Atmospheric River (2023)
a river in the sky has fallen
onto all I see
water, gravity keeps calling
back towards the sea
from the mountains to the ocean
and everywhere between
water molecules in motion
are a living stream
ferocious in its tumbling fury
calming in its roar
as elemental forces cure the
desire for any more
condensation into raindrops
tumbling to the ground
longing now for when the rain stops
falling all around -
water molecules in motion
liquid lusciously
make a kind of magic potion
and...

of your life-sustaining ink,
let me with thee
take the journey
to thy oceanic rink.
in your nature
lies my future,
e'er persistent to your goal;
absolutely,

pressing on, you joyful soul!
still defending,
never bending,

Castor Canadensis
Pale beams on frost pale ground;
the rutting moon has come and gone
and then the Beaver moon hung around
to show the whitefish where to spawn
as she trailed the Pleiades
from early evening, through the night,
then down through all the leafless trees
to charm antipodean sight
by gibbose ostentation gloss
hued as gold as the Bifrost locks
of Hyperion and Helios
and the lumen lovely boondocks
of lodges that the beaver built...
with sticks and stones...and moonlit silt.

when city schools are closed,
and freedom recomposed,
i pack my bags and catch the country bus,
excited by the thought
that summertime has brought
elusive liberties so envious.
the bumpy country ride
on treacherous mountainside
is no deterrent to my thumping heart,
steel-anchored to my seat,
tethered by outstretched feet,
like luggage...

i saw myself in the river
a child in danger at the waters’ edge

i saw myself in the river,
though scarcely could i swim;
my whole self started to quiver,
while stood i on the brim.
i danced about like a vapour
with hands and feet and eyes,
as floaty as human paper;
the waters were my skies.
at first, i loved the excitement:
it seemed that i could fly!
but when i saw the embankment,
i knew that i could die.
the trees and hilltops were seeming
to make me sail upstream;
how could i stand there...

she pulls me
she draws me
the meandering of her stone
the peebles and their echoing tones
whirls, swirls and the vortex, her drop
momentary pauses but never to stop
distance carved in a sediment's path
lending herself as nature's humble bath...
my mind drifts
a spiritual cleansing
for a split second, witnessing.
the tugs, as comforting
as gentle as hugs.

Of river course

Seeing people
Gaze at haze of Grass
And can van
So still that
A murmur
Of ripple in an river
Water may
Disturb the
Calmness
In a valley of flowers across
Grass I gaze the
Wind
And water
So fracious
And the time side of farmer
silence
Green
Of the twigan.
Nature often
Changes its course
But the water remains
Still and craft of the day.
