Returning Home Again
Two schools were merged that day
One filled with African Americans
The other one with mostly whites
That is how it all started
Causing such a dreadful plight
The schools had not been
combined for very long
When everything started to go wrong
The racial unrest was going strong
because some students couldn't get along
We rode the school bus everyday
But often we were waved away
because we weren't allowed to stay
on certain days I always prayed
that peace in our school would soon be restored

Black Heart
irresistible charm I see you clear
I love the place you won't wreck what amuses
see for yourself what I accomplished
your brother is black heart more than you
Alpha you are here I know you
this is a death wish
warn him now
he is disavowed
I am here clear?
I need the fantasy machine turning
a baby angel wish come true
the faith of a mustard see combined with truth
moves mysteries out of the way
in time you will see my value
it's not of my power to dissuade you
but you got my fake Akashic records ...

To the Mothers
As apparent
As a parent
I cannot imagine the pain
Or the agony and despair a woman feels
I cannot think of the torment
A mother experiences
When her child is suddenly taken away
This is for those who have loved
From conception to birth
From early years into adolescence
Shaping and molding a young mind
A mother makes so many sacrifices
Raising her children
All the while society can be cruel
The world may portray an adult
As something else
But through the eyes of a mother -
A mother...

You People
The Mexicans hated when the Spaniards and French said, "you people"
Native Americans learned to hate these very same words
The term was placed on a historic reel and ran like a sequel
Two innocent words placed together and wished that they were never heard
The Irish and Scots played with it amongst themselves until the English took a liking
Unless you've done your research, you don't realize that Africans sailed with Vikings
The English learned to hate the sound of these words while suffering under French rule

Aspects of Joy in a Strange Land
After Gwendolyn Brooks
There it was—
after twelve hours of ocean
and incandescent clouds:
sewn patchwork of color
beyond the portal
of a plane's window
Momentarily gone
—American melancholy
hovering so far from home
I was six—
a whimper amid adult dialogue;
my teacup tongue, rattling
against saucer lips—
unheard
Gaiety—
my father, statuesque ...

No Monarchies!
Of the rich the poor should be suspicious
since we remember from old afflictions
that too much cash makes them injudicious
and prone to corruptions and addictions.
Evil hides behind tradition's shield
and unchecked influence leads to bad things
which is why old Yankees took to the field
to tell the world that...WE DON'T NEED KINGS!
Yet now we're told to kiss the rich man's ass
and that any sort of foment is treason.
But sometimes, when the boss is ungodly crass,
that fomented voice...is the voice of reason!

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sing
By Any Means Necessary (Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.)
I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mama, I know why the caged bird really sings
When the mind as an offering hears sovereignty echoed from the mountains let it ring
From the cradle of birth is to give authority to our mental dreams
Our deferred aspirations we seek to the highest of our esteem
How can I learn to fly when my heart cannot even walk ...

Words given at sunrise
Meticulous mayhem”--
What a paradoxical phrase to wake up with!
And yet, there it was this morning,
begging to be put to use;
but I had no idea how.
This evening, an assignment I’ve chosen;
learning history, politics, spirituality,
violence inflicted by country and church
on indigenous brothers and sisters;
stories gut-wrenching and hard,
but white woman’s tears serve no purpose here;
my job is to listen and learn.
This work requires intentionality,
discipline for difficult conversations,

The Klan (may not be a force but....)
Hatred
Taught by peers
Born from ignorance
Not questioning why
Following blindly
The burning cross
