I used to think you were so mean.
We didn't get along at all.
I lived w different people and you told me many lies, how could u have done that when I was just a child?
I was daddy's girl.
You tried hard to turn us against him ,
But it just made me love him more.
And I hated you.
If not for dad I wouldn't be here taking care of you.. he showed me I had to find forgiveness. So I did.
I forgave but I never forgot.
Now your broken , lying in bed and my heart breaks for you .
Crazy how thats changed .
I once hated you , but loved...

the drunk
The drunk
A thick plastic curtain of the type used in warehouses he could not see through
to other than shadowy figures moving around, he knew he saw a past that
no longer belonged to him.
He sat on the edge of his unmade bed, drinking warm beer, when a sharp knock
on the door of his flat
it was the landlord looking at him with contempt, saying he must pay the rent tomorrow or else!
Despair sizzled through his body needed a strong drink one mixed vodka and cold coffee,
while asking himself how it had come to this losing his job because he had...

hitting a low in class, swearing.
squinting at the board, staring.
digits, words blurring
my mind's shutting down
unable to focus,
uncontrollably shaking,
breathe!
don’t panic!
stay awake!

the red necktie
The red necktie
He woke on the sofa, fully dressed
vaguely remembered an argument with a woman
He took a shower, made coffee
turned on the radio that told of a woman strangled
by a red necktie.
He paled under his fake tan; his tie was red, lost in
a brawl in a bar, did he? No, he was a friendly sort
he liked to think of himself, surely not…!
What to do now? Call the police and confess
To a crime, he could not remember having committed?
He looked out of the window into an empty street
Sunday morning, people were still sleeping...
He woke on the sofa, fully dressed

the dreamers
The dreamers
She has fallen asleep in the living room, watching TV
I feel guilty should have joined her, but soap opera, do my head in
Now, I am going to sit near her on the sofa and when she wakes up
She will think I have been sitting there all the time
She will be happy and hold my hands
I have promised her tomorrow, we are going for a drive along the coast
Stop for coffee and a cake, and watch the young swimmers frolicking
She will tell me again at the time she was a stewardess and danced
The tango in Buenos Aires, not to be outdone, I...

the sober drunk
The sober drunk
He woke up early, had fallen asleep when drunk
now, he was sober trembling hands and blurred vision
full of self-loathing; what happened once, he had been
a little boy in the Vatican and bathed in Fonte Aguiar
that’s what his mother said, and knew it was
not true, but enough for him to expect to succeed.
Walking to work, he had an unimportant snack bar in town
he stopped at a butcher and bought sliced ham to make
sandwiches also stopped at a shop and bought several
bottles of beer to get the courage needed to confront ...

inert tarn
An inert tarn
In the pond of pleasant memories, a duckling paddled
like an unwanted thought of a spring wedding in Brussel.
Flat stones skipped on the pond in the night, quacked
refused to spit out half-chewed toothpicks forgotten.
Expel the duck and send it abroad to the Saragossa Sea
to a shadowy barren island in the stream
where the monster Amnesia lives; you must be warned
keep away if the ogre gets hold of you, it will not eat
the unwanted, but also the memory of those you loved.

cold weather
Cold weather front
A few good days fooled us the cold weather returned we thought it was
early spring. I worried about my almond tree has its buds had been damaged
and will not bloom and strews petals on the lane,
the illusion of frost, the princes in the tower saw in the fairy tale.
The fire in the grate is exuding warmth the dog no one owns snoozes in a chair,
no, the heart to throw it out
I’m not a tree hugger, but give trees a friendly slap
a sucker for the down and out bought a chicken for a Roma women
begging outside, the guard...

For a few lovers more.
I was driving along on the car radio Rod Stewart
Sang” have I told you lately that I love you.”
Perhaps it wasn’t Rod but someone else what
Do I know about popular music?
Why do I find it hard to say those simple words?
I have practised in front of the mirror, like an actor
who knows his line but lacks imagination
I bought her a car instead.
That made her happy, she meet her lover
come back and kiss my bald head and say, “love you.”

I met her lover at a party, walked up to him

I get a chill
from quite a fishy smell,
so sure I'll be betrayed,
so sure of your loveless gaze.

You Really Don't
You really don't want to be around us right now
My wife without her smokes
And me being a fat man who can't eat
I love her and she loves me
But you can't tell it
We're both at each others throats
We know what it is
And we get over it
But lets be honest
It's ugly
A friend came over today
"Why aren't you smiling? You're always smiling"
I put one of those fake smiles, and sipped my water
"I'll live longer," I remind myself
A thought comes to my mind
"If this is going to be my diet, do I want to?"
I ponder ...
