The Invited Guest
One moonlit night I was in my convertible driving through the city of Las Vegas, NV
After losing a lot of cash and getting into a fight with my wife
I went to see a silent film for mature audiences only
As I was leaving the city limits, heading back home in California
I saw a hitchhiker waving me down
He looked mousey, a little disheveled but I felt bad for him
He told me his name was Sid
I asked him where he was headed
He said, “Anywhere you’re going, I’m fine with.”
I thought that was odd
He told me that he was coming from a desert grave...

Rush hour
I'm in a pit of rising anxiety.
Every lane is rammed.
Nobody is cooperating
and rain beats down.
The engine thrums, driving my panic
(pun intended).
Clearly I know
that it's rush hour,
and it continues to worsen.
Add dehydration
and its sinking, metallic sensation to the mix.
Naturally, every light is red
and your reaction is going to
fuel the day-old headache.
It's easy to see why
I'm feeling complete panic
with all this mental noise.
I can already sense your angry words;
the thought...

Two Sexual Numbskulls
An unidentified couple somewhere in America were found dead, post-coitus in their car. They had apparently forgotten the most important safety rule for having sex in the backseat of a car: Either turn off the ignition or open the garage door!

King of the Road
A traveling wiz kid
Shit kicker
Gathering speed
Push button magic
Cyclone launch
Over the edge
Asphalt rising
Hotdogging
Driving into the interstellar highway
Eatin dust!
Neptune’s convoy or the boogie van
Velvet interior, hell on wheels
His freedom of choice
Picking up his trapeze freak, sea hag
At the space farm
She once owned a Coyote Duster
A super shooter, strato-streak machine
Currently lugs around in a Falcon
White dice

Those lace up boots
Memory of doc martens
I had a black pair
Joe 90 had cherry
I first met him letting off firecrackers in his hand and he told me the secret to having balls was hidden in bohemian rhapsody
I could never work it out
Sometimes we swapped one boot for one
How people stared as we stomped around town with mismatched boots, dressed in black
Getting high on rum and coke
Also from the smoke
Motorbike madness
200 kph what a rush
Then you told me you liked to close your eyes at that moment
Like a slow...

Steadfast friend
Sweetheart, oh Sweetheart,
of silver sheen,
we've sailed the city
and chased a dream.
Five years together
in miles untold,
your purr,
a tale of two manifold.
Streetlights dance
on your darling chrome dress,
each avenue a kiss
sweet boulevards caress.
We've chased the sunrise,
we've felt the rain,
seen lovers laugh,
felt abandoned in pain.
Your leather whispers
parked secrets kept,
our laughter shared,
driven tears unwept.
From neon nights
to morning's...

Ghost Drivers
You're freaking me out, Waymo.
I've never seen invisible.
But there you are,
driving with your invisible hands.
Drinking your invisible latte,
radio tuned to KBOO
Take me for a ride, Waymo.
Thrill me with your silence.
Let me stare out the window,
lost in my thoughts,
instead of having to answer
dumb questions about Christmas shopping.
I could like you a lot, Waymo,
once I get used to you.
I want to defend you against ignorant naysayers,
wringing their hands about safety.
I'll vouch for you.
You...

Glove Compartment
I'll know everything I need to know
One look
Papers in order
No excess
What I would expect from you
So much beauty
Drips from your pores
Exquisite organization
Dark chocolate wrapper on back seat
Still human

Teenagers
A slow kiss
clothes peeling off
bodies smooth
sliding close
in tune with the music
on the car radio.
Shirt buttoned wrong
pants zipper down
hair all a mess
mom and dad frown
girl gets pregnant
shotgun wedding bound.

The Ride
The Ride
I heard the shudder in your voice,
the melancholic trill
that told me everything -
it had been convincing
last time we'd walked in,
you were not bothered,
would not be -
after the rain had pushed us
out from East to West
we took to resting on a bridge,
arms left long upon that lichen-textured shelf.
You said that you loved her,
sighed it out, exposed us to it.
I watched that body unfurl.
Sunset burnt on like satsumas,
oozed onto our drenched, Autumn clothes.
I pooled my palm in...
