The Case of the Criminal Queen
a detective story
It was a busy day for Homer Featherstonhaugh and as he leapt from the red London bus, as much as a man of his girth ever leaps, he had a loud enough song in his heart to make the sparrows quit their warblings. He dove into Bidwell’s and ordered a pot of tea and a cooked breakfast. Folks thought it was eccentric of him to eat in a workman’s cafe surrounded by boiler suits and such, or a sign that he was trying too hard to seem like a man of the people, a sort of reverse parvenu. ‘Silly old Homer’ they’d say, ‘Off on his odysseys again. The fellows must think him a...

The Birthday Party
I ordered my own birthday cake
I even bought balloons
Invited friends and family
The party starts at noon
I broke up with my boyfriend
Actually he just dumped me
He couldn’t understand my mind
He asked to be set free
My tiny old apartment
Didn’t have a lot of space
I put out food to snack on
Afraid it’ll go to waste
My mom called first to cancel
After that it was my sister
One by one, they dwindled
My best friend too, I’d miss her
I set up streamers on the wall
Even though no one...

The Glamorous Couple Next Door
flash fiction
They were in a hotel not far from the Spanish Steps. The place was filled with American tourists, including a Mr and Mrs Franks who had sat with them at dinner and asked them to explain various British idioms in their coarse, braying voices. ‘I don’t know how you stand them’ said Jane.
‘Me?’ said Barnaby, rootling through a suitcase on a chair with a broken crossbar. ‘You’re the one who caused them to glom onto us at bridge last night.’
‘I only said that she looked just like me in that hat when I was here last year.’ She threw up her hands. ‘Bah!...

The Catamite
a private-eye story
Just give me another, okay? You know I’m good for it. And I’ve not driven since three months ago when that cop hauled me in for chasing a punk down a culvert in the Bay.
So anyway, I got the job - a while before the last war - sitting in my car outside Georgie’s place. Georgie’s was a speakeasy just off Main, in a house where the bigwigs went, so as long as you kept your nose clean Eliot Ness and his boys let you be.
I was counting through bills to give to the doorman when a fruity-looking guy walks up in a lime green...

String It Up…
In the calling of the winter of discontent
No soul shall smite on Earth soil in the pursuit of relent
The demoness has asked for the calling of her destiny, her devil's due
To the cross as the carcass of her shall hang, the blood drained, unto the rite of her own stew
Upright the garlic cross
Place a garlic crown upon its head and face her to the rising of the Sun
This is a request from the Hebrew Queendom
Make sure you secure the garlic nails
This is what she has asked for to be redeemed back to Hell
Turn the cross...

Dupin in London
fan fiction based on characters created by Edgar Allan Poe
It was in the year 18—— that my friend Dupin and I set sail to London to stay with a sponsor for whom Dupin had rendered a most invaluable service when they were caught in a “cooping” incident, a most disreputable practice whereby a man is plied with drink and then forced to visit polling stations to vote for his assailants’ chosen candidate. The sponsor was a wealthy but naive young dandy from New York, visiting New Orleans just as Dupin had also gone to sample the local culture for a piece to be published in Blackwood’s....

Demonic Vampirism Regret
Man, you mean to tell us brothas you ain’t got rid of that stank ass hellish hoe
That life in the dark don’t bring no clean pussy that taste like honey to the tongue when it flow
Something in that abyss you will never cum to know
Man, she problem have him sucking on her dead looking toes
That’s for sho
Man fuck ya'll... but the broad is crazy, with a low grade mentality
Everywhere I go I could swear she be stalking me
Smelling my draws
Like a Hound from hell in heat, with some...

Lauryn's Date - Part 2
Their first kiss was tender and short. His face was kind in the soft glow of a single lamp in Lauren’s apartment. There wasn’t a second kiss.
Lauryn rose from the couch and stood by a window, her silhouette framed against the city lights. Joseph, nervously shuffling in the background, couldn't ignore the unspoken tension hanging in the air.
Lauryn knew the complexities that might overtake Joseph's life, especially considering the unexpected news about her pregnancy. Despite the allure of their connection, she understood the practicalities and unlikelihood of a long-term...

Once Upon A Death
On a distant mountain
There climbed a girl
Not quite yet woman
She watched and waited
For rocks to quit tumbling down
Before she took her cue
Fearless in her climb
Of a few impatient years
Too eager to know any better
Unprepared for the inevitable fall
When its plates shifted
Her grip began to slip
Cramping her fingers
Until the pain was too much to bear
She finally let go and
Embraced her death
Reborn when the time was right
And not a second sooner
Up she came, a woman now ...
