The Dead Cat in the Hat
The sun did not shine,
It was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house,
All that cold, wet day.
I sat there with Sally,
We sat there in dread.
There was something that stank,
It was under the bed.
We were too scared to look,
But we both had a clue.
What was under the bed?
I think we both knew.
Daddy could be scary
After we went to bed.
I had the worst feeling,
That the thing there was dead.
We sat by the bed,
We sat very still.
I thought of my friend
That I met by the...

Homage To Theodor
Teodoro McGrew
sat alone consuming
purple yak vindaloo
mid the din
of other animated eaters
another Saturday evening
at posh Chez Ballyhoo
Suzy Swansong
Teo’s perky server
asks “any desert…
or perhaps digestif?”
yes please
choochooberries
In dark chocolate slipper
with zingtingle sauce
topped with whipped cream
Teo’s hunger
satisfied, sighs,
claps his hands
to summon the bill
Suzy with flourish,
smiling complies
after paying the check,

Don't ask a hungry teen for poetry prompts
Bananas,” he said
off the top of his head,
“They’re yummy, and radioactive,” he smiles.
Are you kidding? You brat!
What can I do with that??
But I let myself ponder bananas a while.
I could wax sentimental,
and write a parental
remembrance of babies just learning to eat.
Perhaps talk of sweetness,
that aching completeness
when finally a soul mate you happen to meet.
Or I could reminisce
‘bout that comforting kiss
when I tried (and I failed at) banana cream pie.
I could write a big rant
of a world...

The Wally Sticks
Sit back, kick back, I will tell you a story in rhyme,
‘Bout Wallyroo Ninety-Two in his prime time,
So we’ll travel back to nineteen eighty nine,
When he was just fifteen and joined the drumline.
Earlier Wally had been a “sucky" drummer,
Could not keep up the beat, it was a bummer
But over the summer he practiced real hard,
And once in high school he got his calling card.
He leaned to read music and how to play notes,
A skinny nerd who'd never been able to gloat,
He still sucked but he was getting much better,
For one day he...

I Think, I Thought
When thinking of thoughts
We think we already thought
Out loud, we might say
The other night on replay
When we say it today
Maybe said, the other day
Now, but not before
Before, but not now
Forever, I will now know
For now, I will never know
My thoughts, I think
I'm thinking, I thought
I think, I thought
My thought, I think
Don't...

[2019] Hatchet Job
God as my witness -
this lumbering giant, witless
never saw any forest for those trees;
so obsessed with few these days
due to having an ax to grind
Nor did he ever notice
a formal protest lodged
in the back of his numb skull
by that Lorax from behind

[ NaPo 2019 ] The Stray Welcomed To Stay
Perhaps one soul out of two
might be inclined to think
houses litter-boxed with thirty catses
( give or take a few ) just might stink;
would be free of rodentia
especially mouses and ratses
Phew! I'm so very thankful
there aren't any batses!
I certainly do have my hands full
Paws push, claws pull me
in directions a'plenty
Though, I've never been the type
to turn any strays away
What ends up on my doorstep
is welcomed for a stay
Guess who entered my life
as far back as 801 days? ...

A Sneetch ( after Theodor [Dr] Seuss Geisel )
There are havettes, and have notettes–
yet in all honesty, without possessions
who can tell the difference?!
They appear the same shape –
male and female alike; O! But wait!
is it a tittle of a title they covet?!
Or, perhaps, in all honesty –
it’s a jealousy thing ; O! Me! Why
clonedingus another Sneetch?
We each have our trinkets – we’re all
born completus; O! Yet, it’s not enough!
Some Sneetches choose to be leeches!
Is it fortune, fame they don’t deserve –
but feel they...

[ CC ] At The Fish House
There's a cat in a hat run amok in the house
---not an animal like a bat or a rat or a mouse---
not any kind of rodent creature flying or crawling
to distract that hatted cat when it came calling
The only thing at home was a fish with a wish
for the cat to be typical, much like a clish
A clish? you may ask ... Well, it's like a cliche
And a cat in a hat? Not typical in any way
As a matter of fact, this cat was crazy mad!
Mad as a hatter and for a fish, that is bad!

How the Snollygoster Stole Wordmas ( after Theodor [Dr] Seuss Geisel )
Once upon a lifetime
in the heart of a speck of dust,
every little poetic Mite
needed clay to carve their words –
no matter how mundane
or even crazy they seemed;
regardless of any rhyme
rhythm, or even a theme!
Poetry was their life, you see!
And, at the end of each new day
they carved their tablets of clay –
for Wordmas was on its way!
They'd glitter, shine, describe and show ...

[ CC ] The Nowax That Stole Muffletuft
Glorious sunshine raining down;
what a beautiful day is was
from City Hall to Pubble Beach
in the town of Pubblefuzz
Excited citizens celebrating
soaking in an onflux of sunny rays
And the Vitamin D! So abundantly
derived in the most splendid of ways!
As far as voyeuristic eyes could see
up and down the pebbled coast
were sun bathers in the nude---
bodies oiled fronted and backed
on blankets picnic packed with food ...

Flumadiddle! ( after Theodor [Dr] Seuss Geisel )
It’s Flumadiddle! you see
to assume a fact is fact
by just eyeball-contact!
Flumadiddle! I tell ya!
Look underneath!
See what's hidden yourself!
Flumadiddle!
to think we’re separate
despite a color or two or three;
Flumadiddle! I tell ya!
To see a different
heart or brain or liver, ew'ee!
Flumadiddle!
because a heart is a heart
and a liver a liver, ew'ee! ...
