Sewing Circle

In your silence
you left a wake
of ambiguity.

I did not know
how to interpret
what you meant
by the few things you said
and so my mind
filled in the sky
full of blanks
and wordless moments.

What did that mean
when you said that?

I have no way
of knowing,
and so my heart sank,
and that is how
I came to see
the lessons
of your being.

This word
might have meant
this or that,
but I had no way
of knowing.

Your actions
might have had
this or that weight,
but how was I
supposed to know?

You came
into the room
and said nothing.

You left the room
without notice
of your intent.

In radio
transmissionlessness
you broadcast
no certain clues
and I was left
to fill
in the spaces
of emptiness
with my own sense
of what
must have been
going on.

And eventually
I left the room
and I have no idea
if you noticed
or not
or if it made
any difference
at all.

We had not
really spoken
in lifetimes.
