Friends & Lovers
We were never friends,
We were always Lovers,
If a friendship is to be,
It must be based on our past Love.
When Life decided that we couldn't be,
We were left with empty hearts,
We each had our own way of filling it,
You, with guilt and suppressed emotions,
I, with denial and false hopes.
We tried many times to become friends,
But the pain of a lost Love could not be overcome,
We were reminded of our loss every time we were together,
We tarred at each other's emotions until it hurt our very being,
We could not take it anymore,
The Love was there, but reality opposed it,
There was no official statement,
Only unanswered emails and thoughts,
It was ended by atrophy.
Our thoughts may still contain each other,
But now only as a fading memory of what was,
A time in our past that one wants to cherish,
A time in our past the other wants to deny.
What can be no longer matters,
For it can never be,
It is just the way we are,
We handle our emotions so different,
Maybe that is why we cannot be friends.
The lines of communication are now closed,
The ties to the past are gone,
Only fading memories of moments exist.
Knowing what was and that it cannot be.
Will the door to the past ever open?
Will a new present surface?
Only fate can decide.
