Ambushing Fairy Tales

(written with JohnFeddeler)

She pulled her 8 hour shift, her mind wandering, lost all day in a deep complex thought. She couldn't concentrate on her job and that made the hours pass more slowly. She gathered her things and said her goodbye to the clients for the evening. She stepped out the door and looked down the parking lot. It had been years since she had driven herself anywhere. He had always been with her no matter where they were going.

It had been 3 months since he left. She was alone and lost. Not knowing what to do. He had left abruptly. No talking things over no discussions about how to divide the assets. She had given this no thought since the day they were wed. She had nothing now and had to work for everything she needed.

She was a stay at home wife. He was the breadwinner and a loving husband at the time. For 5 years they had lived a life full of love and trust. She catered to his every need, want, and desire. He had made her sing in notes no one else had heard. He could string her moans to any melody, make the sweetest music between two bodies amidst the sheets.

He would pick her up from work, take her for a quiet candlelight dinner and then home. When he opened the door there would be a path of red rose petals leading up the stairs. He would whisper in her ear, "Sweetheart, your bath has been drawn. Go up and relax. I will be there in a few minutes."

Following the petals she would go. Dipping her fingers in the warm water twirling the floating petals around.

But he never did join her in the bath. And that's when her heartbreak began...

A man can go for years thinking he is happy, then suddenly realize he is not...

It happened at the bistro that he went to, by chance, for lunch. He saw Luna, the girl he fell in love with 10 years earlier, in her country during the War. She was working there as a pastry chef. She recognized him immediately, and they embraced, for their own eternity. And he remembered...

One day on patrol, his squad was ambushed. He was wounded, separated from his comrades, and hid in the bushes until Luna and her friends found him. She took him to her hut and nursed him. They were able to converse, since she had learned English at the missionary school. They spoke of many things. And then the worst thing happened: they fell in love.

When he recovered, the other villagers helped him return to his base, but he vowed to come back for her. 4 weeks later, his company advanced toward her hamlet, having secured the surrounding countryside, but they found it burned to the ground. He inquired among straggling survivors, but they knew nothing of Luna. After many tears, had had to accept that she was dead. Until that day at the bistro.

Later, 10 years of separation burned away in the heat of their passion. They responded knowingly to their lover's needs, as if they had personally designed each other's emotions. The strength of their love cascaded purity upon their gripping bodies, and their sex was sacred...

And now, if he could split himself in two, and give a half-love to each of these women, would he do it? No, that would be unfair to all of them. So he stayed with Luna...

During her lonely nights, she had one recurring thought:
Life was not a fairy tale.
Hers certainly was not.
