The Last Walk Away

The phone rings,
I check the display,
It's a call from my darling,
Who has spent some time away.

"Hello", she says in her soft, tender voice,
Such a heart warming sound,
"I don't have long", she continues,
"I was hoping you'd be around".

She begins to let the hammer drop,
Every word another blow,
A non-stop verbal onslaught,
Breaking my heart and turning it cold as snow.

She tells me she's leaving,
Walking away again and it's final this time,
Saying it just doesn't feel right,
Her words have no reason or rhyme.

Just 10 days earlier,
Of marriage was all she spoke,
Now the tune has changed,
And it feels like I'm starting to choke.

We had come so far,
Conquered so much,
We had even become one,
To each other's intimate touch.

She always said I was a great man,
Made her feel things felt never before,
Special, loved, valued, and cherished,
Yet now it shall be no more.

I feel the tears welling in my eyes,
This all feels so wrong,
I loved her with all I had to give,
Thinking of her, I do my best to stay strong.

My heart has been broken,
The tears begin to fall,
I cannot bear this pain,
I'm shutting myself away behind a wall.

So here I stand at the end,
Numb and dead inside not knowing what to say,
Even if I did it wouldn't matter,
This is her last walk away.
