no one really knew her
we all wondered
what she was doing
the day the tornado
raised her house and
then let it down
with overpowering force
it was anyone's guess
what was on the docket
for the day but
one thing was for certain
that woman buried
beneath the debris was
a very vain woman
no one except maybe
a conceited woman
could own all those clothes
no matter now all
that was left of her life
was the silk dresses draped
over the tall lovely pines
leaving us to wonder
well no one really knew her
what she was doing
the day the tornado
raised her house and
then let it down
with overpowering force
it was anyone's guess
what was on the docket
for the day but
one thing was for certain
that woman buried

over the tall lovely pines
leaving us to wonder
well no one really knew her

Outstanding write, Faith. I love the matter-of-fact way the narrator relates the story. I'm hoping this is fictional. Because it really had me smiling in places. Albeit, I have a warped sense of humour! Hints of humour in silk dresses being draped "over the tall lovely pines" & "it was anyone's guess / what was on the docket / for the day." The first stanza, of course, is priceless! Love the poem in every way! :)

Oh, Carlene! You are such a sweet lady. Thank you for your wonderful remarks. To be honest, this poem is based on a true story I heard when I was just a kid. I was sure there was a "lesson" in there somewhere until many years later I found there was a poem in there somewhere. I'm sure I asked what kind of clothes she had and what happened to them, etc. I was writing about how society judges people they don't even know. A woman who is somebody's (or maybe lots of somebodies) neighbor who never knew her for one reason or another. Yes, her clothes were in the trees for everyone to see. The silk dresses made me think she must have had money but money can't buy you friends.
At any rate, I'm glad you enjoyed my poem with it ironies and all. And yes, I did aim for a bit of whimsy to lighten up the tragic feel of the story as I remembered it.

Oh, dear, a true story. How tragic, Faith! And yet brought to life so well by you. Vivid imagery in this piece! Very creative! :)

Thank you very much, Carlene. I never met the lady but I remember very well hearing all of the talk about her. Even though I was only eight years old at the time, I felt so bad for her. The story brought back memories of an event that happened several years earlier while I was still living up north. A lady who lived down the street from us passed away nd no sooner had her body been carried away, people began to flood her house taking whatever they wanted. I remember asking my mother why they were doing it and she said the woaman had no living relatives. It didn't make much sense to me and I remember feeling very sad at the time.
Thank you for your lovely compliments on my poem. They mean a lot to me :)

Faith, this is the first time I've heard of strangers walking into a home - after the owner's deceased - and taking possessions. Apalling!!

Oh wow! What a tear bringing poem. Once today is gone, so are the chances to know someone. Not sure if that makes since. :)

Thank you, dear lady. Yes, you are so right. This is one thing I was trying to get across in writing the poem. So, yes, you made perfect sense.
