Sloth's Prayer

Grateful I am for my seat, i assure
Grateful am I that, in your wisdom
Your fruit abundant to linger
Just outside my fingers' reach always

These memories sanguine
My provenance of blessed security
While others scurry over failed fields, parched
As I meander in and out lush greens, plenty

I've slept my share and my limbs lift weak
With an air unfair you care for the meek
Of which I am, surely

Sleek forms of my stalkers, there on the floor
Pernicious worms squirm square un'er door
Poor envious eyes and supple and spry
Perfidious howls sound hunger and fear
Stocking dark shadows with murderous cries

My gifts, I'm aware
My luck, I know truly
But I fear that my stay may not be so long
For want of their want
For want of your cruelty

Please, don't think my request treasonous
The reason is
That lack of neglect's left me ponderous
Clumsy

I eat my day's fill, then i sway in the vines
While they sprint and sweat and bleed to dine
Dread the day i fall from the trees
This gap of good fortune between they and me
Would be bridged quite quickly
As i awake in a brutal beast's belly

Lord
Give me want, so i might grow strong
A taste of the lash, to go right from wrong
Trees of life riven, to give effort fully
On jungle's harsh floor or sublime canopy
