Snow Angels and Pale Lace

- Snow Angels and Pale Lace -

Once there was a beautiful child, playing in the winter snow...
She liked to build tall snowmen, and cried when they melted so.
I do not think she had any parents, I always saw her as alone...
She always wore the same old hat, the only one that she did own.
No one ever told her she was beautiful, no one could ever care,
Women just neglected her, and not a man would so much as dare.

One day I thought I might adopt her, take her into my very home,
I knelt to ask the child her name, but she just rocked to and fro...
Making angels on the white ground, she seemed not else to know!
Only her innocent laughter rang, in time when the wind did blow.
Then someone told me I was seeing a ghost; no real girl was there,
And I found myself crying real tears over a ghost with golden hair.

No could explain to me, how in her form those snow angels lay,
Nor by what power they had come to be save by her spirit made.
How fleeting is the span of childhood and how fleeting is the time,
In which we must dwell upon this earth, seeking reason and rhyme!
We must care for one another while still we walk in life's embrace,
For too soon comes: the fateful hour when we leave this tired space.

Like angels in the snow, what we love is more than words can say,
And like laughter on the wind, our memory returns when thus bade.
Such a power has compassion, that it makes miracles most sublime,
Bridging worlds to touch hearts, as had happened that day to mine!
When I beheld that lost little girl with her delightful, innocent face,
I never realized it might be a spirit, and one as ethereal as pale lace.
