Ruthless People

Cell phone rings the voices says “Pick up your instructions
Central Park third litter bin from south entrance
After two.”
“Ok” he puts the phone away leaves the cafe
Takes a cab but walks the last three blocks
Making sure he’s not being followed

In the park he sits reading two oh one
Takes his newspaper walks to the bin puts it in
Palms the slim envelope under his coat
Walks on appearing unconcerned

Back home he reads assesses his needs
Equipment selected and inspected
Satisfied sigh a drink now T.V. then early to bed
Checks the photograph again reads he instruction
All is plain
The puts everything through the shredder
Tomorrow is his day to earn great pay

This will be number three at fifty grand a time
Swiss account for a nice amount
After this maybe a holiday a long way away
Sea sun and sex great to relax
Falls to sleep satisfied feeling pride
He’s in the big time at last
All thanks to his ruthlessness in the past

One thirty one just as the instructions said she appears
From the building as foretold now he’ll earn his gold
One thirty one and fifteen seconds she stops
Takes out her cell phone to answer just as predicted
Now she is still
An easier kill silenced rifle spits she sharply sits
Then slumps forward dead a small hole in her chest

As she lies there he has time
For a second shot to the head
Making very sure she's dead
Sees the people running to her no real hurry
He’s half a mile away in a building high
Breaks down his rife puts in it's case
Working at unhurried pace
Rings the number “It’s done” he says

Opens the apartment door he’s startled
She standing raincoat open wide
Stark naked nothing on beside
She smiles whips up her pistol
A double tap into his head
Before he’s hit the floor he’s dead
She drags the body back inside
Just a temporary place to hide

She talks to him like he could hear
“Nothing personal my dear
We only use guys like you
Three times then this is what we do
It’s just business can’t you see?
A matter of security
We are ruthless people too
And there’s plenty more friend just like you.”
