under the summer sun

I've been melting under this summer heat
it leaches my soul through my pores
to drip down my face
and evaporate into the atmosphere

There is a fog in my head
and my nerves are frayed and raw
ready to bite the heads off the flies
that torment me in the world outside these doors

I hide beneath the fan and admire
the dead grass spreading across the landscape
like a brown carpet beneath a glaring blue ceiling
that will rise green from its water deprived grave
when the rain wraps itself around its forsaken roots
like the miracle of a forgotten god
whispering it back to life

And I wonder if I too will live again
when the storm clouds break through the blue
calling me to dance through the humidity
and back into my sweat drenched body, where I belong
