Paint a Smile

I sit in front of the mirror
My reflection stares back at me
Carefully neutral , blank
Slowly I apply moisturizer
Smooth in the base
A clean palette awaits me
A fresh start, a new day
What face will I paint today?
An angry face with frowns and lines?
A happy face with smiles and wrinkles
A sad face with tears and creases?
Let me see what today looks like
The birds are singing, the sky is blue
The day is bright and beautiful
I will be happy today
Paint some sparkle on my eyes
Bright ruby red lips for my smile
Some blush to colour my cheeks
My reflection looks back at me
Happy, smiling, beautiful
But don’t look too close
The darkness  lurks behind
The sparkles and the smile
Waiting to steal this happiness
Waiting, patiently waiting
The darkness is always waiting
Knowing its turn will come again…
