Final Thoughts

I stared into his velvet red eyes, he stared back. Breathing heavily I could hardly stand. I dared not blink, knowing he would take advantage of the moment I faltered in the slightest. There was no possibility of both of our survivals. Either he falls or I do. Mustering all of my remaining strength I ran headlong into chest. Hardly moving him I realized my last effort at surviving was in vain.
Death. Death was upon me. I knew I would soon be dead. I waited, almost welcomed the opportunity to leave my worldly body. I had no breath in my lungs, I was holding on to the man I hated with all my might just in an effort to remain standing. The slashes on my ribs throbbed, blood was blurring my vision. Any second now and I'll be dead.
It was torturous, not knowing when the final strike with fall. Yet, nothing happened. In an effort I have never felt before I looked into his face. His eyes closed, his jaw stern. As I looked at his arms I realized he did not make an effort to block my final attack. On the contrary, he opted to catch me as I fell. I looked back to his face and a single word came to my mouth.
    "Why?"
