This painting will not stay still
The images on it shift and swirl
Colours blending and lines curl
Like impurities round a pearl
The ornate tapestries unfurl

One look and there stares a lusty sinner
Another and a righteous angel appears
Another consumed by its oblivion fears
This one heavy with the solitary years
And one; calculating, logical, like gears

But the most prevalent of these visages
Is not a madman or such a psychotic
Or even a philosopher who is robotic
Or a discontent perfectionist chaotic
Or obsesser of the dark and erotic

A persona amalgamation en masse
Is the splendid picture that shows
Riddled with mysteries to expose
Of the internal friends and foes
One scene is the Romantic and rose
