Image for the poem love past and present

love past and present

the memory of him
standing in our front yard
handsome as a man can be
suitcase in one hand is as clear
as though it happened yesterday
instead of thirty long years ago
but where is he now
jim from connecticut
who charmed me with his smile
i, at the tender age
of eight years old
i know not where
but should i care
it's not important anyway

and where is the
freckled faced neighborhood kid
who held my sweaty hand
at the ritz theatre
never knowing it was
my very first experience of it's kind
i know not if he's still
in our hometown
i do not care
it's not important anymore

and oh there was that first
sweet innocent kiss
from spencer's lips
why he stole a million of them
before he left without a word
was my heart ever broken until then
oh, how i cried
it's not important anymore

i have known loads of men
who have dropped out of sight
shutting me out and
some i have done the same thing to
but this one here beside me
keeps me out for his own reasons
and yet he still stays
is the fact that he
is still here prove anything
in the end who needs proof
that anyone cares
i say i don't care
it is not important anymore
