necessity

building a boat
in the desert

I am far from a carpenter
and can hardly build a thing
except debt
but I got a hammer
and aim enough
to sink nails

enough boards salvaged
to float

won't need to though
here, there's only sand
and I am not Noah

even if we could get through
the stubborn, and the sorry's
the big guy would sooner
speak incendiary
than salvation
to the self-elected like me

but, at least then I'd listen

have to respect a man
frustrated enough to talk fire
to breathe being into the tension
of its opposite
without even the echo
of a function

and
although my vessel
will be reduced to cinders
having never known wave
I will hand braid fibers into rope
knotted to an anchor that will never drop

my boat
will be built without reason
in the most unlikely of places
existing as unnecessary as love
