the useless act of trying to refreeze unfrozen ice

Just as the summer sun melts the ice on the Tundra
I always have
and fear I always will
melt beneath your words
because you are the brightest thing
that has ever shone in the darkness of my life

Some days I cower in the shadows and pray
that you can’t see me
I pray that you’ll forget me
and find another heart to steal
though the very thought of it rips the salt from my eyes
and leaves me tightly tangled around myself
to cry myself to sleep
again

And I cannot stop the scream that’s erupting from deep within
regardless of how far down I have buried these emotions
that revolt against the obsidian coffin of my heart

I cannot bear this burden
of carrying those three precious little words
around inside my throat
for fear they will escape upon an honest
and choked exhale

Because I cannot love you
though I always have
and always will
